Rebuild & Regeneration of Hammersmith Police Station

Stonewest have completed the rebuild of the Grade II* listed arch at Hammersmith Police Station, which was closed in 2016 to allow an extensive £59m regeneration project to take place. The arch, which links two buildings within the police station, was dismantled brick by brick to enable unrestricted plant access to the site. Each brick was categorised, cleaned of its lime mortar and the 20,000 salvaged bricks were held in storage for 2 years until the main construction phase had taken place.

The local planning authority stipulated that the character of the building be preserved. We therefore blended modern construction methods in the rebuilding which was based on hydraulic lime mortar. To accommodate the new design additional granite was needed which required us to identify the existing and propose matching samples for Heritage approval prior to design and procurement.

The project has transformed the police station into a modern, state-of-the-art facility containing 38 custody cells, 18 stables with capacity for 1,000 officers.
