Restoration Completed at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden
Stonewest NewsRestoration works to the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden are now complete. This Grade I* listed building is the most recent in a line of four theatres which were built at the same location, with its current incarnation being built in 1812. The refurbishment of the 1812 Greek revival façade saw Stonewest appointed to undertake specialist works forming part of the £60m restoration project, instructed by the theatre’s owner, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Works included undertaking façade surveys to establish the range of defects, followed by façade cleaning, repairs to the brickwork, render and stone. Corroding steel was exposed and treated. Redecoration of the stucco facades, including the signs and gliding completed the work. Elsewhere, York paving was re-laid to the internal courtyard and balcony areas. Decorative re-tiling was also carried out in a number of areas, including a rest room used only when Her Majesty visits the theatre.
