Project Overview

Previously the Victoria Road Detention Centre situated on Mount Davis, the award-winning conservation and revitalisation of the heritage buildings converted the Grade 3 historic buildings into the University of Chicago Heritage Courtyard and Interpretation Centre as well as classrooms and a variety of student spaces whilst retaining unique features such as the disused battery gun emplacement.

After wide-ranging investigation and testing of the existing building fabric, an extensive A&A package was awarded to Stonewest (HK) to ensure that the new building design met with current codes and standards.

Key Successes

  • Selective underpinning work to existing foundations of the retained facades.
  • Design and installation of temporary works for retained turret building features.
  • Demolition and recasting of RC slabs, beams and columns.
  • Concrete Repair to defective existing substrate.
  • Existing beam and slab thickening works.
  • Recording, dismantling and reinstallation of the heritage lattice wall.
