Western Pumping Station, Victoria
Description
External refurbishment of the façade of a Victorian Pumping Station built as part of the Sir Joseph Bazalgette extensive upgrade of London’s Sewerage System in the 1830’s. On investigation on the condition of the roof and cornice to the Pump House and the cast iron head of the chimney, further restoration and repair works were carried out.
The works involved:
Main Pump House

- Removal of cast iron sections of cornice and failed cast iron trims, “scuppers” to copper roof, refurbishment off-site and re-fixing.
- Replacement of lead gutter and trims to the cornice gutter.
- Repairs to fractured and degraded brickwork and Portland stone in the facades including re-pointing.
- Roof light, window and door repairs including replacement of glazing.
- Reorganization of rainwater disposal system.
- Redecoration of all cast iron work and external timber.
Auxiliary Pump House
- Slate roof repairs.
- Stone and brick repairs including isolated re-pointing.

Chimney
- Refurbishment of cast iron head cap to chimney – 52 meters high. As a result of the condition of the cast iron, scope of work increased by a factor of 6. All works to cast iron were carried out on site, the bulk in-situ due to the weight of the units involved.
- External redecoration.
- Internal electric upgrade and replacement of failed step within the chimney.
