The Portland stone parapets to both West and East elevations of the bridge were in need of upgrading.
The works involved:
- The parapet upstand includes the bases for the protective railing structure which required replacement to meet today’s safety criteria.
- To replace the original railings in steel the complete stone parapets have been dismantled salvaging as much stone as possible prior to rebuilding.
- The contract required a hanging scaffold design structure over the parapet and erection and dismantling phases of this work included safety precautions in the form of river launches.
- The works were phased to permit maximum use of the bridge by road traffic and the design criteria met with English Heritage requirements.
