Caversham Mansion, Reading
The East and West colonnades of this imposing mansion were cleaned and restored to a high standard. The exposed position of the property had subjected the Bath stone to the erosive effects of our climate and extensive areas required replacement.
The works involved:
- The distinctive balustrade ranges were rebuilt and new modillions fixed to original line and detail.
- The Ionic capitals needed complete replacement, which was achieved by cutting out the volutes in quarters and phasing the operation to minimise the temporary works and risk disturbance.
- Virtually complete repointing was required and repairs to much of the column faces was carried out in specialist mortar repair.
