St John’s Wood Synagogue
The 70-year-old portico comprising some 800 No. stones was carefully recorded and dismantled and stored off site during the redevelopment works. The classically designed feature with its six Ionic columns surmounted by a heavy entablature had a coffered ceiling within and a rear wall of ashlared stone with engaged pilasters, some stones weighing up to 2 tons.
- Prior to rebuilding, fractures and damaged stones were replaced and badly eroded areas restored using specialist repair mortar techniques.
- The rebuilt portico was slightly reduced in height to accommodate the new structure.
