Hasilwood House, Bishopsgate
Following the City bomb in May 1993 Hasilwood House, situated almost at the greatest point of impact, suffered major structural damage. Further to emergency making safe works areas of the Portland stone facades were carefully recorded on drawings and by photograph before being removed to off site storage.
The works involved:
- Removal of the internal terracotta hollow pot skin, plus extensive areas of polished stone finishes.
- More than 18 months after the bomb, work commenced to rebuild the classical facades using much of the original Portland stone some of which required repair prior to its return to site.
- Work included the backing structure, installation of lead and asphalt to cornices and a bird deterrent system.
